Growing up we’re told to“protect the planet and make sure to leave the world a better place, but do we know what that truly means? In school, our kids learn about the impact we have on the planet’s health which can be overwhelming and depressing. Giving our kids the resources and education to show how they as individuals can make a true impact helps empower them to create change. Here are 3 easy ways to teach the importance of sustainability to our children.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

One of the easiest ways to teach our children the importance of sustainability is to educate them on how to reduce, reuse and recycle. Having a community that emphasizes conscious behavior can shape our children into better thinking, habits and decision making when it comes to taking care of our environment. Reducing our consumption, reusing items we can, and recycling waste or even composting are easy, everyday steps you take to show your child how just your family can make a difference.

Conserve Water

Another simple way to show our children to reduce their carbon footprint can be implemented into our children’s day to day lives. Simple steps like turning off the water while brushing teeth, washing and soaping their hands, and reducing shower or bath time are great ways to make a difference, no matter how small. These are all steps that can easily fit into the day to day lives of our children to make into a habit, but it’s up to us to encourage our kiddos to do so, and most importantly lead by example and model as parents too.

Plant A Tree

There are many benefits when it comes to planting a tree such as reducing erosion and pollution, while also providing food, oxygen, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals. Planting a tree with your child has both an internal and external impact. You are both creating memories and strengthening the bond you already have with your child while simultaneously protecting the planet. Watching the tree grow , become stronger, and be a benefit in the world almost mirrors the process in watching our children grow.

Setting the foundation of living a more sustainable life is crucial now more than ever. As we continue to advance in technology, we have to remember the things that keep us alive and take care of them. Leading by example is the best way for our children to follow in our footsteps and make the world a better place for themselves and their children. In honor of Earth Day, we’re planting 6 trees for every TickTalk 4 purchase for the entire month of April. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to live more sustainably for your family, community, and environment, here it is!
